Our Founder & Chef
Meet Doug Appeldoorn, the founder of Schoolhouse Kitchen. With 35 years of culinary expertise, Doug's journey began as a humble short order cook in a small-town diner. He worked for a many years at the Eaton Chelsea in Toronto and, more recently, was a craft brewer and brewery owner in Toronto's Junction. As a Prud'homme Master Beer Sommelier, he spent nearly a decade as a certified instructor, teaching hundreds of students. A seasoned world traveller, Doug draws inspiration from global flavours, infusing them into his hyper-local, seed-to-plate cuisine. Alongside his culinary ventures, he's a dedicated nano farmer and forager, crafting small-batch maple syrup and raising a flock of hens for egg production next to his heritage home, an 1877 Schoolhouse. Doug's diverse background and commitment to quality shine through in every dish.
